Aranyadeb: The Bengali Phantom Comics
Aranyadeb is the Bengali name of the Phantom, a popular comic book character created by Lee Falk in 1936. The Phantom is a masked crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla. He is also known as the Ghost Who Walks, the Man Who Cannot Die, and the Guardian of the Eastern Dark.
The Phantom comics were first published in Bengali by Anandabazar Patrika, a leading newspaper group, under the name Aranyadeb (meaning god of the jungle) in 1967. The comics were translated from English and adapted to suit the Bengali readership. The comics were immensely popular among the Bengali children and teenagers, who eagerly awaited the weekly issues of Anandabazar Patrika's Sunday supplement Anandamela.

The Aranyadeb comics ran for more than 40 years, until 2009, when Anandabazar Patrika stopped publishing them due to declining sales and rising costs. During this period, more than 500 issues of Aranyadeb comics were published, featuring stories from various Phantom series such as King, Mandrake, Flash Gordon, and Defenders of the Earth. The comics also introduced many original characters and stories that were not part of the original Phantom canon.
One of the most notable features of the Aranyadeb comics was the artwork by various Bengali artists such as Narayan Debnath, Pratap Mullick, Dilip Kadam, Souren Roy, and others. The artists gave a distinct Bengali flavor to the Phantom comics, by incorporating local elements such as costumes, landscapes, animals, and cultural references. The artists also experimented with different styles and techniques, ranging from realistic to cartoonish.
